The Nome Gold Rush was Alaska’s REAL gold rush.
And it was REALLY RICH.
The three lucky swedes rocked 20 ounces of gold a day out of Anvil Creek in 1898.
But they didn’t find it all…
The gold rush is still on at Anvil Creek at AKAU Gold & Resort, which owns all the historic gold claims at the heart of the Nome gold rush.
I personally watched a woman named Rhonda find a quarter-ounce gold nugget with a metal detector at AKAU in 2023.
She’d never metal detected a day in her life!
Of course it’s not always that easy. Gold’s a fickle substance and it doesn’t always want to be found, even where there have been huge strikes.
But there’s a reason 5 of Alaska’s 10 largest nuggets were found on Anvil Creek.
It’s an incredible deposit and, frankly, prospecting there is a very rare opportunity for regular folks to find real gold.
I love showing people the real Alaska.
I think if I wasn’t a gold miner I would have been in the tourism business.
Betty and Augie, the mother and son team that started AKAU, have given me the opportunity to do both.
They agreed to host you, put you up in their comfortable lodge (it’s no easy feat getting heat and running water in the bush – AKAU has both), and bring you down to the harbor so that we can give you a live demonstration of the Eroica.
They also agreed to host my crew for dinner so we can come visit you at the camp!

Extra toys like ATVs, side-by-sides, and kayaks are available for rent – as are special accomodations (on a limited basis).

The one thing that’s hard to convey is just the quality and value of this trip.

Nome, and western Alaska in general, is a rugged place. Modern amenities are expensive and rare.
But at AKAU they make the guest experience really comfortable. They care.
I’ve spent hours hanging out in the beautiful great hall over the years.
Mining historically rich gold claims with a real chance of finding big nuggets is just exceptionally rare in the secretive business of gold mining.
And even if you and your travel buddy aren’t interested in getting on the gold – they’re pretty much the only folks in Nome that will give you the tools to go on all of western Alaska’s best adventures, including fishing for wild salmon, riding four-wheelers, and seeing amazing historical and cultural sites at the edge of the world.
